Shingle Roofing FAQs

Shingle lifespan depends on the type: 3-tab shingles last 20-25 years, architectural shingles last 30-40 years, and premium designer shingles can last 40-50+ years. Actual lifespan varies based on installation quality, climate, maintenance, ventilation, and weather exposure.

3-tab shingles are flat, single-layer shingles with a uniform appearance and typically last 20-25 years. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker, multi-layered shingles with a textured, dimensional look that mimics wood shake or slate. They’re more durable, last 30-50 years, and offer better wind resistance and warranties.

While building codes may allow one layer of shingles over existing roofing in some cases, we generally don’t recommend it. A complete tear-off allows us to inspect the roof deck for damage, ensures proper installation, maximizes the new roof’s lifespan, and is required if you already have two layers. Most manufacturer warranties also require tear-off to the deck.

Most installations take one to four working days to complete. However, since the roof is exposed to the elements, some replacements may take longer due to weather conditions. Roofs with more intricate details may require additional time and attention.

The best shingle color depends on your home’s style, siding color, and personal preference. Neutral colors (grays, blacks, browns) are versatile and timeless. Lighter colors reflect heat and can reduce cooling costs, while darker colors absorb heat (beneficial in colder climates). We offer color consultations and can show you samples against your home to help you decide.

Yes, for most homeowners. Architectural shingles cost 20-30% more than 3-tab but offer significantly better value: they last 50% longer (30-40 vs. 20-25 years), have better wind resistance (up to 130 mph), superior warranties, enhanced curb appeal, and better return on investment. The longer lifespan often makes them cost-effective over time.

Look beyond the warranty length and consider: manufacturer reputation (GAF, IKO, BP, CertainTeed are all excellent), what’s actually covered (material defects vs. algae resistance vs. wind damage), whether it’s prorated or non-prorated, transferability to future homeowners, and maintenance requirements. We’ll explain each warranty option and help you choose the best coverage for your needs.

Quality architectural shingles are rated for winds up to 110-130 mph when properly installed. For hail resistance, look for impact-rated shingles (Class 3 or Class 4) which are specifically designed to withstand hail damage. While no shingle is indestructible, premium shingles with proper installation provide excellent protection against the Fraser Valley’s weather including heavy rain, high winds, and storms.

David was very helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Derick, the field service manager, was the same. The crew was great, and they addressed any concerns I had when they came to mind. They thoroughly cleaned up at the very end, and delivered a top quality roof for our house, garage, and pump house, using great quality materials.

Action Roofing has just completed a full re-roofing of our home converting it from a cedar shake to a GAF(UHDF) shingle roof. The project went extremely well - from David providing the quote and keeping us updated, to Derrick overseeing the project, to the crew doing the work. It came in on time and under budget. We can certainly recommend Action Roofing as an excellent company for any roofing project.
